“I came to escort someone”: Men’s experiences of antenatal care services in urban Ghana—a qualitative study

Abstract Background Male involvement in maternal healthcare has been widely recognized as essential for positive health outcomes expectant mothers and their unborn babies. However, few studies have explored men’s experiences of services. The purpose this paper is to explore antenatal care urban Ghana discuss how men navigate roles a space that constructed feminine. study draws upon theories space, place, gender. Methods A qualitative exploratory using semistructured interviews, focus group discussion, observation was conducted Accra, Ghana. Expectant fathers workers were interviewed, at selected public hospital Accra. Results findings suggest the who attend with expecting partners become involved limited extent clinic’s activities. Beyond take an active role, most stay on outskirts grounds rarely participate consultations partner midwife. Men still view presence necessary acquire knowledge sources emotional, financial, physical support partners. On workers’ side, found no clear agenda engaging clinic, nurses/midwives felt there lack staff could engage more directly men. Conclusion indicates feel too shy uncomfortable locate themselves female makes up care/maternity wards. Health do not they resources involve fruitfully. Thus, activity hoped but rather remain maternity clinic. if continue negotiate clinic assertive roles, could, time, be transformed into which both can actively engaged benefit all.
